Who should attend? This workshop is appropriate for mental health professionals, teachers, and body workers as well as for individuals looking for an interactive and experiential path toward personal growth and understanding of mind-body connections. Gestalt psychotherapy is a humanistic therapy focused on heightening awareness of the present moment, active experimentation with new behaviors, and sharpening awareness of thoughts, emotions, and body sensations. Through active engagement with the Gestalt process in a supportive learning environment, participants are encouraged both to engage in their own personal growth and to be part of the personal growth of others. Participants will learn fundamental Gestalt concepts such as six basic interpersonal contact styles, the paradoxical theory of change, figure/ground theory, phenomenology, and the Cycle of Experience-a model for understanding human growth. This workshop satisfies the Introductory Gestalt Workshop prerequisite for all training program applicants. References will be requested of all participants. Jim Etzkorn and Kathy Clegg are associate faculty of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland (GIC), established in 1954 by some of the earliest students of Fritz and Laura Perls. The GIC is the world's largest institute for the study, development, and application of Gestalt theory.
